environmental protection
by adopting the following policies in all relevant aspects of its operation:
Establish and maintain a documented environmental. Management system
that conforms with the Requirements of ISO 14001 standards;
Comply to all relevant government legislation and other requirements
pertaining tot he preservation and protection of the environment;
Implement measures and strategies that will promote waste minimization,
pollution prevention, conservation of resources and recycling of waste;
Commit itself to set and periodically review its Environmental objectives
and targets;
To have these policies communicated and understood by all SPC employees;
And to make this statement of policies available to the public upon
request
Sharp
Corporation (Japan) spearheaded the global corporate thrust
to minimize adverse effects of processes, parts and products on the
environment. Sharp (Phils) Corporation followed suit by adopting "people
and the earth" paradigm as its environmental philosophy. Environmental
Management System (EMS) was adopted in 1996 to ensure a rational approach
to environment-focused activities and programs.
EMS
DOCUMENTATION
The Standards and Approvals
Engineering (SAE) department has established the EMS documentation which
comprises the following:
a. Environmental Policy and Procedures - to establish clear direction
and focus.
b. Environmental Objectives and Targets - to ensure systematic implementation
of EMS activities.
c. Information materials (brochures and flyers) - to bolster awareness
and inspire committed participation.
AWARENESS,
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Massive training and orientation
activities were also undertaken in able to distribute awareness. Basically,
all employees will undergo EMS basic training to have a clear understanding
of the objectives, targets and programs.
Currently, EMS specific
trainings are being developed to further develop environment-focused
practices.
THE
AUDIT SYSTEM
Audit System was put in
place to standardize EMS activities and practices.
First EMS Internal Audit
had been done to measure compliance to the stringent requirements of
EMS, in preparation was conducted in September 1996.

ISO
14001 CERTIFICATION
British Standards Institution
(BSI) assessment activities started in June, 1999 with Mr. Keith Martin
as Lead Assessor
Mr. Ernesto Rendon assumed
the EMR post in August 1999, and took the lead in the over-all efforts
to obtain ISO 14001 certification.
Mr. Danilo Pedron, General
Affairs Department Manager, and Mr. D. Torres, Jr. SAE Manager, worked
on the final completion of all ISO 14001 requirements.
Substantial investments
have been put in various environmental facilities to fully satisfy
certification requirements.
BSI conducted the ISO 14001
Phase II & III Assessment last July 2000. Mr. Keith Martin led the
BSI assessors in a thorough audit exercise.
